LEON ALAYO, Melba Lourdes y HUERTAS-ANGULO, Flor. Nursing Cares that Strengthen Breastfeeding of Neonates in a Hospital. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2021, vol.37, n.2 Epub 01-Jun-2021. ISSN 1561-2961.
Introduction:
Breastfeeding is a public health concern worldwide. However, the percentage of newborns worldwide who are exclusively breastfed has decreased in recent years.
Objective:
To describe the nursing cares that strengthen breastfeeding in neonates attended in joint accommodation and intermediate care.
Methods:
Qualitative and descriptive study with an exploratory design based on Swanson’s and Kolcaba’s theory. It was carried out during 2018, in the joint accommodation and intermediate care areas of Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo. Fifteen care nurses and nursing interns participated. Data collection was nonrandom and carried out using the interview. Discourse analysis was carried out after literal transcription of the interviews.
Results:
Two categories were identified: “Ensuring care for breastfeeding” and “Promoting commitment to the family and the institution”.
Conclusions:
Nursing cares consist in identifying care needs, facilitating breastfeeding through comfort, support and education for the mother. Likewise, it lies in the commitment to breastfeeding, through continuity of breastfeeding, with the consideration of beliefs; as well as promotion of family and institutional involvement and the application of current norms that strengthen breastfeeding.
