Abstract

MIRANDA, Taymer et al. Sustainable development: Perspectives and approaches in a new age. Pastos y Forrajes [online]. 2007, vol.30, n.2, pp.1-1. ISSN 0864-0394.

The concept of development constructed in the Western world was based on the mechanicist and rationalist paradigm, from a vision of dominance over nature, and let aside the protection of the environment. In this sense, the environmental paradigm demands to see development as something intrinsic to the essence of the environment. This vision leads to act over any field from an approach in which nature and the environment are considered strategic factors of development (Anon, 2005). In fact, the proposal of ‘sustainable development’, as the name itself suggests, is an attempt to face, integrally, the challenges of our mankind. The emergence and strengthening of the efforts towards development enhance the meaning and importance of the livestock production sector, the rural family, its impact on food security and its contribution to the conservation of agricultural biodiversity and the sustainable management of natural resources (Cruz, 2003). The search of agricultural development in Cuba was a process that began since the triumph of the Revolution, although the development schemes neglected nature, man, their needs and history. The new holistic vision begins, thus, to influence all the reflections regarding the policies and strategies of development in our country. The understanding of this approach leads to the interpretation of the complex reality and the recognition of development as a process permeated by relationships of interdependence and complementarity, in which the respect towards nature, the knowledge of its limits, its history and the participation in the construction of the future become the most relevant elements in search of an actual development process. This work deals with sustainable development and its relationships with nature.

Keywords : Development; agricultural sector.
