Abstract

A trial was conducted with the objective of evaluating three provenances of Jatropha curcas on a lixiviated Ferralitic Red soil of the EEPF ¨Indio Hatuey¨, at the nursery, establishment and harvest stages. All the provenances needed between 70 and 90 days to reach their emergence maximum level. The plants from Cape Verde (called African) were the first to germinate (11,5-24,6% between the first five and 25 days) and the other two germinated 35 days after planting. One hundred and sixty days after planting, the African one reached the green seed phenophase; while the other two were budding. The African provenance was also statistically higher in terms of leaf number, stem diameter and seedling height. There were no differences in the production of fruits with three seeds, indicators in which they all reached more than 70%. Two hundred and forty days after planting (harvest) a high decrease in the leaf number was detected, but the lowest percentage was observed in the African provenance (69% with regards to the total). The weight of the seed harvested in the African provenance was 7,1 times higher than the Las Tunas provenance (moderately ramified) and 22,4 times higher than the Sancti Spiritus provenance (less ramified). According to the results, the African plants stood out for their performance. Likewise, the introduction of a higher number of accessions is considered important, as well as the completion of studies on seed quality.
