Abstract

GOMEZ, I; OLIVERA, Yuseika  and  ESTRADA, L.L. Intercropping of five temporary grain legumes, during the establishment of Chloris gayana cv. Callide on a Vertisol soil. Pastos y Forrajes [online]. 2014, vol.37, n.3, pp.298-304. ISSN 0864-0394.

Abstract: In order to evaluate the effect of polycropping on the establishment of Chloris gayana cv. Callide, varieties of two species of temporary legumes were intercropped: Vigna radiata (var. frijol chino) and Vigna unguiculata (var. cubanita-666, lina, INIFAT-93 and IITA-precoz), at the moment of pasture sowing. A randomized block design was used, with four replications. In the intercropped crops the number of plants per square meter was measured, 30 and 45 days after sowing; as well as the grain yield, number of grains per pod, number of pods per square meter and weight of 1 000 grains. In the pasture the number of plants per square meter, height, cover percentage 90 and 180 days after sowing, and yield 6 months after sowing, were determined. There were significant differences (p < 0,001) in the cover percentage of the pasture at both ages, with higher values in the polycrops. The intercropped plants showed significant effects in all the studied variables. The var. frijol chino had the highest population and grain yield, and was exceeded by INIFAT-93 in the number of grains per pod; while the var. lina stood out regarding the weight of 1 000 grains. It is concluded that the use of polycropping improved the cover of the pasture C. gayana cv. Callide during the establishment and contributed to grain production, with outstanding results in the species V. radiata.
