A practical guide is presented for the indication of hemoglobin electrophoresis used in the screening of abnormal hemoglobins in the Programme for Prevention of Sickle Cell Anemia, standing in Cuba at present, as well as the interpretation of phenotype and the risk of having children with hemoglobinopathies SS or SC.
