An analysis of the low birth weight index's behaviour in the province of Santiago de Cuba during 1985-1994 is carried out. It is discussed the results within the frame of the clinico-epidemiological and social approach starting from natural history, and making special emphasis on its interaction with socioeconomic development. The authors propose the biosocial physiopathology of undervelopment, and consider low birth weight as a starting point.
