: Several general features about the current concepts about health surveillance, and their application at a primary care level, are reviewed, specially emphasizing the role of the family physician in this activity in our country, with the aim of improving the health situation in the community. The elements of their conception, introduction, functional baseline requirements, and basic components, are described, as well as the attributes that it must fulfill in its assessment.
