A theoretical up-to-date review on the cause, mode of transmission, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, therapy, prevention and control of pediculosis is offered based on the information found in the MEDLINE and LILACS data bases, and in the Cuban medical literature from 1987 to 1996. Some classics of the topic located in the information organs of the National Systeme of Medical Sciences Information, as well as the Methodological Dossier of the Ministry of Public Health for 1996 are included.
