GOMEZ GARCIA, Lourdes; MARTINEZ ALMANZA, Leocadio; ROMERO SONORA, Víctor  e  RODRIGUEZ, Reinaldo. Estado de la ventilación pulmonar en fumadores activos y pasivos. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 1998, vol.14, n.5, pp. 462-467. ISSN 1561-3038.

A historical cohort study is conducted to analyze the repercussion of the smoking habit on pulmonary ventilation. The population aged 15 and over at the municipality of Camagüey is taken as a universe, and every individual from the three retrospective cohorts (active smoker, passive smoker and nonsmoker) is considered as a unit of analysis. The sperimetric results of diminished pulmonary ventilation are assessed, and a survey including clinical examination and microspirometry is done among 120 persons (40 from every cohort). It is stressed that 60 % of the smokers presented alterations of pulmonary ventilation and mainly the active smokers (80 %). The cigarettes-cigars combination had a greater impact on pulmonary ventilation. The daily time of exposure to cigarette smoke affects the active smoker in a steady way, wherea the risk increases in the passive smoker as longer is the daily time of exposure. The physical examination is an important pattern for the early diagnosis of ventilatory damage. No specialized test is necessary
