An exploratory study was conducted with a sample of 649 individuals aged 15 from the "Granma" and "Yaguajay" rural areas between January and December, 1996. A close survey was used to know the present psychiatric symptomatology and the possible causal factors, as well as the medical personnel that treated them. Psychiatric symptoms were observed in 74.5 % with predominance of women and, above all, in the age group 46-65. Depression, anxiety, sleeping and character disorders were the commonest symptoms due to family, economic and social factors. 54.8 % of them were treated by the family physician and a high percentage of these patients felt fairly controlled after treatment
