A descriptive, retrospective, longitudinal and comparative study was conducted at the area of the "Manuel Pity Fajardo" Teaching Polyclinic, in the municipality of Guane, to analyze the mortality from cerebrovascular diseases in the period 1987-1996. Data were obtained from the death registry of the Provincial Department of Statistics by using the mobile average, the relative difference and the relative risk. It was found a mortality from these diseases of 56.0 x 100,000 inhabitants with a decreasing trend. The main causes of death were intracerebral hemorrhage and cerebral thrombosis. Most of te deaths occurred among people aged 65 and over due to intracerebral hemorrhage and after 75 to ischemic events. Females had a higher possibility to die as a consequence of hemorrhagic episodes, and men due to ischemic episodes. There was a predominance of urban origin in both groups.
