A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 91 children that were born between January, 1991, and December, 1993, at 14 family physicians´ offices corresponding to the Basic Working Group of the "Antonio Maceo" Teaching Polyclinic in Cerro municipality, Havana City, was conducted. Biopsychosocial factors related to the mother and the child were analyzed. The data base was made by the Foxplus program. Mean comparisons were also made and the comparative method of percentages was used. Early weaning predominated in children with low birth weight, and in children of student mothers or housewives with low level of information about lactation. The commonest causes for giving up breast feeding were hypogalactia and the fact that "the child is not fully satisfied".
