An intervention study for the application of the standard treatment protocol for acute respiratory infections and the use of antitussive syrups and other medication was made after being proposed by the Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization, at the Eastern Community Hospital of Camagüey in the year 1998. The study material was constituted by the 252 children under 5 years of age with diagnosis of acute respiratory infection. The record of patients treated and their individual medical history were the primary data sources. The most relevant outcomes being that after intervention the use of antitussive syrups decreased (44.04%), as well as the ambulatory cases (37.6 %). It was concluded that there was a prevalence of male sex and the age group of 1-2 years old. The most frequently used medication were expectorants and mucolytic medication in common catarrh, a decrease being noticed after intervention.
