In order to know the social and abnormal alcohol drinking, as well as some psychological traits of the personality of the alcoholics among the population of Esmeralda, province of Camagüey, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the urban area of this municipality. A sample of 400 persons was taken at random for a confidence level of 99%. All the subjects took part in a survey and answered the diagnostic indicators questionnarie (DIQ) to identify the social and abnormal alcohol drinking. Those classified as harmful consumption and alcohol dependance underwent Eysenck's personality inventory that identifies some psychological traits of the personality. 65,75% proved to be drinkers. Social consumption showed a higher prevalence (41,75%). In all the groups of drinkers males prevailed over females (P<0,05). Those individuals included in the harmful consumption and alcohol dependance (8,5%) were considered as alcoholics. Introversive subjects (82,34%) predominated among them
