Abstract

BEMBIBRE TABOADA, Rubén; JIMENEZ PEREZ, Delvis  and  LOPEZ REGUEIRO, Teresa. Leptospirosis en la provincia de Cienfuegos. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2000, vol.16, n.4, pp.335-339. ISSN 0864-2125.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease and a health problem that has not been erradicated yet. A descriptive and retrospective study of all the patients suffering from leptospirosis in 1998, in the province of Cienfuegos, was conducted. The primary data were obtained from the register of the Provincial Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology (PCHE). A survey was done to obtain data of interest, such as: sex, age, municipality of residence, post, source of infection, previous vaccination, evolution, need of admission and follow-up by the family physician in order to determine the behaviour of the entity in the studied period and the role played by the family physician. The data were processed by Windows EXCEL system and the main results were shown in figures designed by Power Point. Morbidity from this affection decreased 33.3% in the province in comparison with 1997. There was no letality and males prevailed with 40 cases. The age group 25-44 pre-dominated (70%). The highest incidence was observed in the municipality of Palmira. None of the patients had been immunized with the Cuban antileptospirosis vaccine.77% of the cases were admitted at home with a favorable evolution, which showed the effectiveness in the primary health care and the role of the family physician in the preventive and curative work. The seroconversion and the increase of the titer were the main tests of confirmation of 45% and 41%, respectively. There are still indexes of rodents in the provincial territory that should be taken into account. The work of the family physician and nurse may be efficient in the control of leptospirosis with the minimization of its prejudicial consequences
