Resumen

ZAYAS VINENT, Meinardo. Logros y desafíos de un médico de familia en la gerencia del programa nacional de control de la tuberculosis. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2000, vol.16, n.5, pp.491-496. ISSN 0864-2125.

A descriptive and retrospective study on the main impact and operational indicators of the National Program of Tuberculosis Control in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba from 1996 to 1998 was carried out in order to compare this program with the previous one and to show its achievements and challenges. This Program was managed by a family physician with the advising of epidemiologists. The percentages, the rates and the standardization of rates were the statitistical methods used. It was observed that morbidity and mortality decreased as a result of this process and that the most affected age groups were those over 45. The number of cases with negative bacillocospy declined at the primary level, whereas the diagnosis of those with positive bacilloscopy at the secondary level was maintained. The screening indicators increased in the health areas. Based on the above, it was recommended to continue training family physicians and nurses in the knowledge of this Program so that they may identify the risk groups in their community
