An observational and analytical case-control study was conducted among 117 women attended at "La Rampa" Teaching Polyclinic, in the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución. 17 of these women had a newborn infant with a birth weight under 2 500 g. The rest of them had children with the same weight or higher. The influence of some history as the order of births and pregnancies, the number of abortions and the previous low weight gestations and certain pathological history of the mother were analyzed. It was concluded that the factors that influenced on the birth of a low birth weight infant are, among others: the first birth (RR=2), the first pregnancy (RR=1,8); having had 2 or more previous abortions (RR=4,9), having had one or more low birth weight infants (RR=6,9), and some maternal diseases as urosepsis (RR=3,7), chronic hypertension (RR=3,21), anemia (RR=2,7) and asthma (RR=1,9)
