A descriptive study was carried out by observing 60 workshops conducted by professors of General Comprehensive Medicine in "Reina" and "Santos Suárez" Teaching Polyclinics of Havana City from November, 1994, to May, 1996, in order to determine norms of practical usefulness that increase the efficiency of their use. A guide of observations was utilized and a workshop was held with these professors having more experience on this topic. In most of the efficient workshops the residents and professors prepared themselves previously and the initial motivation was good. As regards the organizational aspects, there were differences between the efficient and the inefficient workshops and the evaluation made by the professor prevailed. It was concluded with a series of practical norms that contribute in an important way to make the teaching workshop more efficient
