Abstract

PEREZ CARDENAS, Clara. Atención integral a pacientes oncológicos en la Atención Primaria de Salud. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2001, vol.17, n.3, pp.263-267. ISSN 0864-2125.

Cancer is a disease that has been associated with pain and death. As in any other patient suffering from a chronic disease, in these patients the relations of the sick individual with his environment, as well as his preestablished roles are altered. There are some changes that may be identified as common as, for instance, the uneasiness they experience in relation to their present and future, including the preoccupation about their quality of life. That's why it is so important the team work to treat the patient with cancer in a comprehensive way and with a biopsychosocial view. What is new about our proposal is precisely the fact that we want to give them our attention as early as possible, very close to the diagnosis, in order to accompany the patient and his family during the whole process so that he may improve his quality of life and have our support in the same setting where the disease develops, that is, in the community where he lives. In this paper, we offer a brief explanation of our style of work as a group in the health area and of our 4 basic tasks: the training of the health teams to treat these patients, the psychological diagnosis of each case, the identification of concrete needs of any type in every patient and the work to be done with the families to give them our support and to prepare them even for mourning
