Summary A descriptive study was conducted between February, 1999, and February, 2000, in order to identify the most frequent reproductive preconceptional risk (RPCR) factors and to evaluate the influence of the Family Planning Office (FPO) on its control. The sample was composed of 200 patients from the Family Planning Office classified as RPCR. The most common RPCR factors were malnutrition (26.5 %), an interval of less than 2 years since the last childbirth (21 %) and age under 18 (19.5 %). The level of knowledge about their risk factors and how to modify them increased after the educative intervention up to 60 %, but most of them did not modify any of the risk factors that were modifiable. It was concluded that the FPO had little influence on the control of the RPCR and that the rise of the level of knowledge about their risk factors did not determine their modification.
