Summary Comments are made on an article written by Father Félix Varela Morales that was published in the Repertorio Médico Habanero, in 1841, and in which it is explained the design of a system to improve air and its circulation in hospitals. This paper is an important antecedent for hospital epidemiology, besides being curious for having been designed for the outstanding philosopher and priest, who was always worried about the well-being of those needing hospitalization, in spite of the fact that he did not practice medicine.
