The Thematic Plan proposed by "Pedro Kouri" Institute of Tropical Medicine for the next years, as well as the great challenges to be faced are explained in this paper. Emphasis is made on the experience accumulated by its professionals as a guarantee for the success of these interventions. The paper establishes that it is very necessary to continue improving our primary health care (PHC) system, which is recognized as a novel, complex and unique model in the world. It is stated that the application of the epidemiological approach to PHC may help to enhance the performance of the social actors that take part in it, and to make better the efficiency of the model for the benefit of community health.
