The World Health Organization has announced that the mortality and disease picture will dramatically change in the next two decades. In fact, depression will jump from the fifth to the second place behind the coronary heart disease. Some diseases that are leaders today such as respiratory infections will lose their predominance after being completely managed. However, their places will be held by mental disturbances. Neurological disorders ranging from depression to Alzheimer´s disease, which affect 400 million people worldwide, will remarkably increase. The present review paper sets forth the fundamental aspects to be taken into account for an adequate management of depressed patients by family physicians.
