The interrelationship of family physician, polyclinics and hospital within the Cuban health care system was analyzed but taking those criteria related to the reference and cross-reference process as a basis. We hope that the units of our Ministry operate as part of a real system and the fulfillment of this objective is very much linked to the level of interrelation that may be established. In this regard, the development of the reference and cross-reference process is in practice the best way of assessment. The antecedents as well as a general vision of the type and quality of communication among the different levels and institutions of the system and among the health professionals in relation to the management of common patients are set forth. Deficiencies are discussed in a critical way and alternative solutions are suggested to improve the efficiency of the health care system.
