MORERA CASTRO, Yadira A.; GONZALEZ GONZALEZ, Lidia M.; GARCIA HERNANDEZ, Marlene  y  LOZADA GARCIA, Limay. Factores de riesgo ateroesclerótico y comunidad. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2003, vol.19, n.2. ISSN 0864-2125.

Atherosclerosis is a progressive and slow disease of multiple origin that affects family and may become more serious depending on the family style. There are risk factors like body hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking and obesity that can be controlled by a correct follow-up in the community, thus achieving the reduction of the serious consequences of atherosclerosis. We selected for our study 300 patients aged over 15 years who presented with some risk factors and others that suffer the most serious consequences of this disease (132 males and 168 females). When we assessed the most common risk factors and distributed them by age and sex, we observed that 101 were smokers in which 31-60 years-old group prevailed (70 cases); 91 were hypertensives mainly over 30 years of age, with females prevailing. Twenty five were diabetics (18 aged over 61 and 7 aged from 30-60 years). There were 21 obeses, fundamentally women; 31 were cardiopaths and 5 suffered cerebrovascular diseases, all of them over 30 years. For these reasons, we decided to conduct a social and sanitary study in our community to determine the possible atherosclerotic risk factors and to have a preventive impact on the community.
