An analysis of the prevalence of arterial hypertension from 1995 to 2000 was made and it was proved how from 1998 on, the province of Matanzas achieved a significant increase of its known prevalence of arterial hypertension from 10.2 x 100 inhabitants over 15 to 26.3 % by an educative intervention in the community and through an active screening carried out by family physicians and nurses with a wide community participation. The final results of the screening are shown in this paper. On comparing it with the rest of the country, it was observed that Matanzas attained a higher effectivity in the active screening oriented by the National Program for Arterial Hypertension Control, and the highest prevalence known in the country.
