Abstract

GONZALEZ MENENDEZ, Ricardo. From the physician-patient relationship to the psychotherapy of the general physician. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2004, vol.20, n.5-6. ISSN 0864-2125.

After making a brief reference to the initial exclusivity of psychotherapy in the field of psychiatry as a result, in part, of the exigencies of the first psychotherapeutic model, psychoanalysis, the author stresses the importance of the contributions of Carl Rogers with his psychotherapy of the relations and of the placebo effects of the physician-patient relationship underlined by Shapiro and Frank. He makes emphasis on the progressive transition of the benefitial effects derived from the intrinsic potentialities of the physician-patient relationship and those resulting from the utilization of psychological resources. He considers as essential aspects of the psychotherapeutic management the identification of the needs of psychological aid of the user, the assessment of the objectives established according to the possibilities of the physician, the selection of the adequate psychotherapeutic resources, the constant control of afferent and efferent communications, the permanent planning of the psychological influences, as well as taking into consideration the feedback of the inmediate results to continue or modify the planning of the resources to be used. It is important to leave the general phsycician to evaluate the level of the complex psychotherapeutic management he may reach, according to his training and interactions, in his effort to attenuate ailments.

Keywords : Psychotherapy of the general physician; meaning of the physcian-patient relationship; planning of the resources to be used.
