Abstract

MARTINEZ QUEROL, César et al. Fragility: a challenge to geriatric care in PHC. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2005, vol.21, n.1-2. ISSN 0864-2125.

A descriptive study was conducted in the geriatric population of a circumscription of our polyclinic that receives attention at the family physician's offices. The 178 older adults answered a questionnaire that collected their personal data. Particular emphasis was made on the presence of fragility factors appearing in the consulted accredited literature. The individual and family medical histories of all of them were reviewed. A screening of 49 older adults (27.5 %) was carried out. It was observed a predominance of females. The most frequent causes of this phenomenon were as follows: comorbidity, 29 (59 %); loneliness, 24 (49 %); 20 (41 %) were 80 or over; 12 (24 %) had no off-springs; and 10 (20 %) were single or divorced. The results were represented in tables and compared with the reviewed literature.

Keywords : Fragility; older adults; comorbidity; loneliness.
