Abstract

LUGONES BOTELL, Miguel; PICHS GARCIA, Luis Alberto  and  GARCIA HERNANDEZ, Marlen. Informed consent. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2005, vol.21, n.5-6. ISSN 0864-2125.

A bibliographic review about informed consent was made. The characteristics of the attention given to the patient since ancient times were analyzed. At that time, there was a predominance of the so-called paternalist beneficence, since the patient did not have the capacity to decide and he was submitted to the physician's criterion who had all the moral, authority and enough knowledge to indicate him what to do with his health. This prevailed for a long time until the appearance of the informed consent, where the patient's autonomy regarding the medical decisions acquires a great importance.

Keywords : Information; patient's rights; autonomy; consent.
