Drug dependence is a phenomenon that causes disorders in the biological, psychological and social spheres. In order to characterize the behavior of the inadequate use of drugs in persons linked to the consumption of these substances in Plaza municipality, a prospective, quantitative and cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 89 cases reported in the Compulsory Disease Declaration Card and by the Technical Department of Research in this territory, from 2000 to 2003. An anonimous questionnaire was applied. It was observed the predominance of the age group 20-29 (41.57 %), of males (92.13 %), of single individuals (41.57 %), of subjects with middle educational level (71.91 %), of unemployed (62.92 %), and of subjects aged 10-15 years old at the beginning of consumption (50.88 %).
