Some characteristics of adolescence, as well as its concept and classification are described. Data referring to this population in Cuba that include sociodemographic and health information are given. The topic on the importance of the basic social nucleus in the development and efficient accompanying during this stage is reviewed, and comments are made on the Cuban Program for the Comprehensive Health Care of Adolescents. Information on the fertility and the main poblems of morbidity and mortality among the Cuban adolescents is given. Mortality statistics are presented in relation to the first causes. The importance of sexual education at this age is outlined.
