MEDINA VALDES, Anai; LEWIS LUJAN, Lidianys María; PEREZ MENESES, Miguel Ángel  e  HERNANDEZ ALBA, Enoelia. Food habits in the consumption of vegetables in a population group. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.3, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.

This paper is aimed at studying the food habits in the consumption of vegetables in a population group, its relation to smoking and the possibility of suffering oxidative stress risk. A descriptive study was carried out and a survey was done on food habits and life style among 84 patients aged 15-73 from the family physician's office no. 23 of the Calabazar health area (58 females and 26 males). The results were processed by the statistical program for Windows. The preferred vegetables were tomato, lettuce, cabbage and cucumber. Spinach, eggplant and raddish were the less accepted. It was observed that for all the age groups, particularly for the smoking population, the consumption frequencies are once or twice a week, so the recommendations of the international agencies on this regard are not accomplished. The low consumption frequencies may be associated with the cardiovascular diseases that affected our population the most. That's why this population may be at risk for oxidative stress.
