Abstract

BERDASQUERA CORCHO, Denis; GALA GONZALEZ, Ángela; OROPESA GONZALEZ, Lisset  and  SUAREZ LARREINAGA, Carmen Luisa. The control of recent syphilis. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.4. ISSN 0864-2125.

During the last years, it has been observed a reduction of the notification of patients with syphilis and an increase of HIV/AIDS patients at the world level. In the present research, it was conducted a descriptive case study, where all the persons with diagnosis of syphilis reported by the municipality of Guanajay, Havana province, from 2000 to 2004, were included aimed at describing their behavior and characterizing the fufillment of certain indicators of the program. From 2000 on, it was observed a trend towards the decrease of the indicence rates. This municipality had the highest rate (54.8). The disease was more frequent in subjects aged 20- 29, in males (52.3 %), in white persons (48.1 %), with a middle educational level (6.7 %) and in workers (48.1 %). More than 85 % of the patients had no a stable partner at the moment of infection. The recent symptomatic acquired syphilis was the most common clinical form (59.3 %). The index of contatcs(2.5), the epidemiological index (0.17), and the serological follow-up of the patients, mainly 9 months after the diagnosis, were not accomplished. It was concluded that the behavior of the syphilis cases in the municipality does not differ from what happens at the national and international level. In spite of the fact that it has been registered a decrease of the incidence, the control of syphilis seems to be a health problem.

Keywords : Recent syphilis; control; surveillance; sexually transmitted diseases.
