Abstract

Morbimortality from ischemic stroke. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2007, vol.23, n.4. ISSN 0864-2125.

Strokes are the third cause of death in Cuba and in most of the developed countries. Its appearance and torpid evolution are closely related to the existence of diseases or risk factors, such as: diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, previous vascular encephalic accidents, smoking and obesity. Ischemic stroke is the cause of most of thrombotic and  embolic strokes, whose consequences are prostration and disability. A cross-sectional  descriptive study of those patients admitted in the special care ward of “General Calixto García” Hospital with stroke diagnosis from January to July 2006 was undertaken to identify the most common risk factors, to evaluate the acting  protocols, to determine the degree of disability on discharge, as well as the most frequent causes of death. It was found that the disease had the highest incidence during the seventh and eighth decades of life and that the most significant risk factors were arterial hypertension and the previous history of stroke. The acting protocols were not accomplished for multiple reasons. Just 26.2 % were asymptomatic from the functional point of view on discharge. The rest presented some type of disability. The most common cause of death was extraneurological.

Keywords : Stroke; risk factors; acting protocols; disability degree; death cause.
