Abstract

LUGONES BOTELL, Miguel; MACIDES GOMEZ, Yanisbel  and  MIYAR PIEIGA, Emilia. Arterial hypertension and some associated risk factors in the middle-aged woman. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2007, vol.23, n.4. ISSN 0864-2125.

A case-control study was conducted at the family physician’s office # 5 of the “26th of July “ Teaching Polyclinic, in Playa municipality, from April 1 to June 30, 2006. All the essential hypertensive women aged 40-59 entered the study. Per every categorized hypertensive women, a control of the same age and race was selected. The following variables were studied: arterial tension figures, nutritional assessment, smoking habit and physical exercises. The standard deviation, percent and chi square test were used for the statistical analysis. (p < 0,05) was considered as significance level. It was concluded that most of the hypertensive women were overweight or obese, smokers, and that  they did not do systematic physical exercises. On comparing them with the nonhypertensive, statistically significant differences, such as overweight, obesity and the absence of physical exercises, were observed. It was also found that in spite of being categorized and treated, many of the hypertensive had higher arterial tension values than the controls, and that climacteric women showed the highest hypertension values.
