Abstract
RODRIGUEZ-OJEA MENENDEZ, Arturo; BAEZ, Rosa María and FARINAS RODRIGUEZ, Lucía. Recumbent anthropometry in the elderly . Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2008, vol.24, n.2. ISSN 0864-2125.
An anthropometric evaluation of the nutritional state starting from weight, height, arm and leg circumferences, triceps and subscapular skin fold and knee height was carried out aimed at evaluating the equations for calculating weight and height starting from evaluable body measurements in recumbent position or lying down. The group included 99 older adults aged 60-87 (72 females) without physical or mental limitations preventing them from walking and that were able to be standing for the physical examination. The results obtained show that the weight and height measurements do not differ significantly from the obtained by the equations developed starting from the alternative measurements. The correlation between the variables measured and the calculated was positive and with statistical significance, even for the indexes calculated starting from them. Recumbent anthropometry is an easy and reliable method that may be applied to evaluate the nutritional state in the elderly, or in any other group with limitations to undergo the anthropometric evaluation standing.
