Abstract

HERNANDEZ DIAZ, Adel; ORELLANA MOLINA, Alina  and  GONZALEZ MENDEZ, Bianka M. Low potency laser therapy in Cuban medicine . Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2008, vol.24, n.2. ISSN 0864-2125.

The appearance and development of laser was possible thanks to the advances previously attained in other scientific disciplines in the last century. From the practical point of view, it may be considered as a narrow monochromatic and coherent beam of light that may be found in the visible infrared or ultraviolet range of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiations. Motivated by the introduction of the laser equipment of national production into the rehabilitation wards of the teaching polyclinics and other health centres of the country, we made this paper aimed at presenting the different applications of low potency laser in the medical sphere, as well as the Cuban laser equipment which are available in the national public health network. The therapeutic effects of laser radiation and the internal mechanisms to attain them are shown and the contraindications of this therapy are exposed in detail. This treatment offers many possibilities of therapeutical help and allows its successful use in pathologies of diverse specialties. Laser therapy is a first-line treatment for many of the affections presented by the patients that visit the physician's office.

Keywords : Low potency laser; use in medicine; therapeutical efficacy.
