Resumen

OBJECTIVE: to characterize the women seen in climacteric and menopause consultation of "Eusebio Hernández" University Hospital regarding: clinical manifestation, family and labour environment, and chronic disease. METHODS: authors made a cross-sectional and analytical study in 450 women aged between 40 and 59 from La Lisa, Playa, and Marianao municipalities, seen from January 1, 2006 and January 1, 2007. Different variables were studied and responses were considered as favorable or unfavorable by criteria established in survey. RESULTS: there was a predominance of hand and feet cramps in 79,5 % of perimenopausal women, and 82,4 % of postmenopausal ones, as well as the flushs or warmths in 53,8 % of perimenopausal ones, and 76,5 % of the postmenopausal ones. In the latter there was a predominance of psychological symptoms in those with an unfavorable work environment. Family environment influenced significantly in presence of a great number of clinical symptoms in the perimenopausal ones, and in work environment of the postmenopausal ones. There is an increase in appearance of some chronic diseases after menopause: high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and osteoporosis, with the 52,9 %, 29,4 % and 11,8 %, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: there were clinical manifestations in the perimenopausal ones and in the postmenopausal ones too. Environment had its influence, e.g. for the first ones the family one was significant, and for the latter, the work one.The more frequent chronic diseases in postmenopause were the high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and osteoporosis.
