Objectives: to identify the main risk factors influenced on the causes of low birth weight of newborn seen in the "Isidro de Armas" Polyclinic from Playa municipality. Methods: study of case-control conducted from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2008. The socioeconomic and biological variables were analyzed including: mother age, marital status, schooling, occupation, smoking, personal pathological backgrounds, nutritional assessment, weight gain and newborn weight. Results: the women included in study group aged 30-34 supplied the great figure of low birth weight newborns (34.1%) and in those without low weight predominated the age group of 20-24 years. Most of women in both groups hadn't personal pathologic backgrounds, however, among those with this type of backgrounds, predominated in study group the high blood pressure (17.1 %), asthma (14.6 %) and smoking (9.8 %), and in control group asthma and smoking (2.2 %) and urinary infection were present (7.3 %). Conclusions: extreme mother ages, low schooling and the marital status hadn't influences on the low birth weight, while the occupation (worker mothers) yes had influence as well some diseases as high blood pressure and bronchial asthma.
