Introduction: the Primary Health Care has become the key strategy to achieve equity in health services. Objective: to delve into the emergence and the social and historical development of the primary health care up to the present times. Development: the background and the bases for its emergence as well as the conferences and events that have influenced its development were shown in this article. Conclusions: the primary health care is aimed at achieving greater equity in health status and in access to services, better health results in the population, better overall efficiency of the system, lower costs and finally greater satisfaction of users with the health care services.
