Abstract

HERNANDEZ RODRIGUEZ, José; ARNOLD DOMINGUEZ, Yuri  and  LICEA PUIG, Manuel Emiliano. Sarcopenia and some of its most important features. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.3, e898.  Epub Sep 01, 2019. ISSN 0864-2125.

Introduction:

Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and strength, added to the poor physical performance. This condition depends on genetics, environment, the natural aging process and of some diseases that sometimes accentuate its progression.

Objective:

To describe in a general way some of the most important features of sarcopenia.

Methods:

It was used Google Scholar as scientific information searcher. There were used as keywords: Sarcopenia; aging; muscle mass; muscle strength. There were evaluated review and research articles from different databases as: PubMed, LILACS, Cochrane, SciELO, and web pages, that in general had less than 10 years of being published in Spanish, Portuguese or English language, with an adequate scientific and methodological quality according to the authors criteria. There were excluded the articles that did not meet with the objectives of this work. This allowed the study of 110 articles, of which 62 were referenced.

Conclusions:

Sarcopenia is a frequent and relevant geriatric syndrome. It is a serious health problem by increasing the morbidity and mortality. It is frequent in it the adynamia in relation to the decline of the physical functioning, the strength and the muscle mass. For its diagnosis, it should be demonstrated at least the reduction of muscle mass (with x-rays dual energy´s absorsiometry or with analysis of the bioelectrical impedance analysis), a reduction in the strength of the grip of the hand with dynamometer, and the muscle function (reduction of speed).

Keywords : Sarcopenia; aging; muscle mass; muscle strength.
