Abstract

The challenges the universities have to face at present and the role they will have to play in the transformation of higher education during the next millenium are approached. It is analyzed how the academic excellence and quality are key and controversial elements in higher education. The different variables taking part in it are also studied. It is stressed the influence of globalization and how to face it it is necessary to strengthen the capacity of negotiation, insertion and competitiveness of the universities. It is explained how to increase the quality of the university process it is necessary an efficient academic management, the capacity of autoevaluation, and the interuniversity and intersectorial exchange and cooperation. The influence of the scientific and technical boom , as well as the characteristics the new type of professional to be formed should have are underlined in this paper. Finally, the 4 fundamental milestones that support the development of the quality of health manpower are approached
