A community-wide intervention project is described, which has been implemented since 1995 in the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos; the first Latin American city in the network of healthy municipalities. The main objective is to establish a healthy way of life for students, professors and workers and combine promotion, prevention and healing in health education under the guidance of the family physicians who view the University as a community. This project is developed with the active and conscious participation of the whole population and is based on a characterization involving the identification of priorities of problems. The project works in favor of creating healthy behaviors at curricular and extracurricular levels, as part of a comprehensive preparation to achieve healthy life styles that make it possible for them to familiarize with the role of health promoters on the basis of their personal example. Life conditions improved by 80%, teaching and life at the Medical school campus also bettered by dealing with cardiovascular risks, alcoholism, obesity, diet balance, healthy nutritional habits, oral health, sex and reproductive health, breast and cervix cancer prevention and family-school relationship in case of low academic performance. Better professionals will graduate from university, who will be ready for the community work. This encourages the family medicine work and places the Faculty as a School that promotes health care.
