At the end of 1995, significant processes had ocurred in the health ethical sphere - all of them in a frank increasing development - capable of generating growing impacts on the training of the Public Health Master. Based on this fact, a descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was conducted aimed at characterizing the presence of ethics in the Public Health Masters training during the courses 1996-1997 and 1999-2000. The universe of study was composed of 3 masters degree programs (Public Health, Primary Health Care and Health Psychology) offered by the Public Health Faculty and of 170 final papers to obtain the master´s degree, which are available at the Information Center of the National Public Health School. It was concluded that the presence of ethics in the training process of the Public Health Master in those courses was limited, which is observed in the null or reduced space occupied by their contents in the imparted syllabuses, in the low frequency with which the explicit ethic assertions appeared in the papers developed and, in general, in the poor quality of the ones that were included. Besides, the factors whose influence may be associated with this situation were identified and recommendations were made for its improvement.
