The incorporation of Social Sciences to the training process of health human resources has been favored by the appearance of new social demands from the health professions that require the redimensioning of the field of activity and of the system of knowledge, abilities and professional values as a condition for the successful performance in the new situation. In spite of the advances attained, the insertion of Social Sciences in the training of human resources faces still serious difficulties. This study is directed to determine the current state of the process of incorporation of Social Sciences to the Public Health postgraduate education at the international level and in Cuba. The state of this process is described starting from the identification of academic structures, syllabuses, and the main areas of knowledge where they are represented. To this end, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. 60 institutions that developed postgraduate syllabuses in Public Health in 2000 were included. An analysis of the content was made by reviewing Web pages and printed programs to obtain information about the academic structures, the syllabuses and the areas of knowledge in which Social Sciences take part. The results made easy the comparison of the present state of the insertion of these sciences in Cuba with the rest of the world, allowing the improvement of the standing and future syllabuses.
