The emergence of professional nursing as a science that holds an important place in the development of health sciences is analyzed. It is shown in the paper that nursing as a profession is acquiring the category of a scientific discipline, which continuously tests its own theoretical bases and fosters the academic development of the professionals in this field. This is exemplified with the nursing care process as a scientific working method in which the human values of this profession are featured and demonstrated. The ethical and bioethical principles ruling the performance of professional nursing are addressed. It is concluded that the use of the nursing care process as a scientific working method encourages broader communication and interaction among the patients, the nursing staff and the rest of the professionals and contributes to turn them into change promoting-agents, advocators and collaborators of the nursing profession.
