An analysis is made of meanings and criteria stated by different authors about the term competencies from the theoretical viewpoint, and particularly the teaching competencies, their role in the development of the academic activity as well as their significance for the professional and the student alike, particularly those that are involved in the sphere of health technology. Some papers specialized in this field are cited together with the relevance of their research works for the educational work, on the basis of the problems detected in the undergraduate formation of these professionals and the imbalance between the assigned functions and the proposed curriculum. This paper reaffirms the need for the development of these competencies so as to increase the quality of education, of the formation of human resources in the National Health Care System and of the service rendered to the population
