Abstract

VICEDO TOMEY, Agustín. Integrated medical education: An african experience. Educ Med Super [online]. 2008, vol.22, n.1. ISSN 0864-2141.

OBJECTIVE: to assess the application of an integrated curriculum model for the medical career in Walter Sisulu University. METHODS: a structured observation of the integrated teaching plan in relation to the solution of health problems was made. The curriculum was described making emphasis on basic sciences. The advantageous or disadvantageous aspects of this plan were evaluated. RESULTS: the development of self-training and communication skills, the formulation and assessment of judgments and hypotheses, the early contact with clinical and epidemiologic topics, and the participation in different learning activities in the community were stressed as positive elements. The high number of professors required for tutelary activities, the limited assimilation of systematizing cognitive elements, and the organizational difficulties are some of the inconveniences observed. CONCLUSIONS: as a whole, it is a very interesting model and a pedagogical experience worthy to be known and spread.
