AIM: to describe the background and needs that gave rise to the Health Information Management profile in the career of Health Technology Baccalaureate at the Health Technology Faculty of Havana City during the academic course 2006-2007, and to analyze by a group of indicators the results obtained by the students. METHODS: the aspects supporting the training of technologists of this profile were explained, the background and needs that gave rise to it were described, and the results attained by the students during the academic course 2006-2007 were analyzed by a set of indicators. RESULTS: the main results showed that the design of the professional competences of the future graduate allows solving the needs of the specialties included. CONCLUSIONS: the behavior of indicators such as promotion and retention was satisfactory. The participation of the students in different extracurricular activities of their training (political, cultural, and sports) was positive.
