^les^aOBJETIVO: enfatizar en las cualidades personales que deben reunir los profesores de la educación médica. DESARROLLO: se hizo referencia a que el Ministerio de Salud Pública tiene la responsabilidad de formar su capital humano, a la importancia que ha adquirido el sector salud por las múltiples actividades y programas que desarrolla, a la red de instituciones que posee, al reconocimiento que le confiere la sociedad cubana a los maestros y profesores, a la misión formativa de la educación médica, a la red de centros docentes existentes, al incremento de la matrícula de estudiantes a partir del año 2000, a las características generales del claustro, a los conceptos de instruir, enseñar y educar, a la colaboración docente internacional de los profesores y a las cualidades políticas, humanas, sociales y profesionales que deben reunir los profesores de la educación médica. CONCLUSIONES: en lo que respecta al claustro, se aprecian avances tanto cuantitativos como cualitativos, pero dada la elevada matrícula actual de estudiantes y que continuará en el futuro, el incremento de los escenarios docentes, las variadas modalidades de formación en las carreras de ciencias médicas y el desarrollo alcanzado en la universalización de la educación médica superior, se requiere de un claustro cada vez mejor preparado integralmente y dotado de elevadas cualidades personales, para así lograr resultados superiores en la formación de técnicos, profesionales y especialistas de salud, para que ello repercuta positivamente en lograr un servicio de excelencia a la población cubana y de países hermanos que lo necesiten y soliciten.^len^aOBJECTIVE: to emphasize the personal qualities the medical education professors should have. DEVELOPMENT: reference was made to the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Health in the education of its human capital, to the significance acquired by the health sector by means of the multiple activities and programmes developed, to its institutions network, to the recognition the cuban society confers to the professors, to the formative mission of medical education, to the network of teaching centres, to the increase of the student registration from 2000 on, to the general characteristics of the body of professors, to the concepts of instructing, teaching and educating, to the international teaching collaboration of the professors, and to the political, human, social, and professional qualities the medical education professors should have. CONCLUSIONS: with regards to the body of professors, quantitative and qualitative advances have been observed, but due to the high current registration of students and to its future rise, to the increase of educational settings, to the variety of training modalities in medical sciences careers, and to the development reached in the universalization of higher medical education, it is necessary a better body of integrally trained professors with high personal qualities to achieve higher results in the training of health technicians, professionals and specialists, that allow a positive impact on the development of a service of excellence to the cuban population and to the friend countries that need and request our assistance.
